Urwerk co-founder Martin Frei takes us on a journey through space and back in time in 1997 when discussing the design of the UR-101 T-Rex, which was released on March 19.
“The original idea was not to make a T-Rex dinosaur, but to create a different pattern texture on the case. I have always loved geometric guilloché patterns,” said Urwerk co-founder and chief designer Martin Frei of the UR-101 T-Rex case.

Typically, the guilloché pattern, made with the help of an old-fashioned rose lathe, is used on dials, and you can't touch it. “But when you put it on the case, it invites you to touch it; you can feel that it has this tactile quality, and you want to touch it – what does this 3D texture feel like?” Mr. Frei explained, adding that oxidized and brushed bronze increases its luster over time. “But it doesn't turn green like bronze sometimes does. It's all about the alloy, and here, it's stabilized by adding more aluminum to the copper. So the luster becomes more brown, almost a little red.”
The Maltese cross has been Urwerk's signature complication since it released its first watch in 1997.
